Overview

The first thing I want to make clear is that this is all in my opinion. I do provide numbers that support my opinion but there is always room for human error. If I did miss something or overlooked a GPU please let me know in the comments below.

Buying a GPU now can be scary due to ETH2.0 coming around the corner, so if you are unaware of the ETH 2.0 issue then you can feel free to watch my ETH 2.0 video which will hopefully clear out some doubts for you.

NVIDIA Lite Hashrate Identifier

NVIDIA recently did this thing where they are trying to not let miners use their cards for mining but instead waste resources on really bad mining dedicated cards that can even be reused by gamers. Honestly, it is silly.

So this little hashrate label or LHR is only for the Ethash algorithm which includes Ethereum and Ethereum Classic. Ethereum is going to Proof Of Stake within this year or the beginning of the next, so by then that LHR label is not effective anymore.

There are also a lot of cryptos on the rise lately that can compete with the profitability of ETH so I don’t think that label is going to stop miners at all. I would have rather them avoid wasting chips on cards that can’t be recycled within the community in a global chip shortage.

How Long Can A GPU Mine For?

This will most likely surprise you if you're a new miner, but they can easily mine for 5+ years if taken proper measures. Now of course luck plays a role too, if you get bad silicone or just a bad GPU then it is unfortunate, but in general, if you keep them in cool conditions and not too hot by proper undervolting, airflow, and frequently dusting them, then you will be all set.

Overclocking and undervolting play a big role in this, I do talk about it a lot in a video about this topic so if you're new to it I highly suggest watching this video.

The Way To Compare GPUs

So now for the GPU comparison, I will be showing you the top 4 algorithms as of the date of this video, so do keep in mind that the top 4 might change around but what will remain unchanged is the Hashrate per watt and potentially the Hashrate per dollar.

These are two ways to compare the GPUs for mining. One is based on efficiency through wattage and the other is based on maximizing your budget potential. The higher the value the better for BOTH.

5. Nvidia GTX 1660 TI / 1660 Super

The 1660 TI and Super are some pretty old cards but still are fairly efficient cards to mine with and they are capable of mining other algorithms well. 1660 Regular is not that good of a choice unless you can find it for a lot cheaper.

The algorithm comparison below will differ slightly, but in general, the 1660 TI outperforms the 1660 Super in algorithms other than Ethash.

Overview:

Top 4 Algorithms:

Algorithm Ethash (ETH) Autolykos (ERGO) KawPow (RVN) FiroPow (FIRO)
Hashrate & Wattage 32 MH/s - 70W 64 Sol/s - 65W 12 MH/s - 70W 12 MH/s - 70W
MH/Watt 0.457 MH 1.00 Sol 0.171 MH 0.171 MH
MH/Dollar 0.056 MH 0.087 MH 0.025 MH 0.004 MH

4. Nvidia RTX 2080 TI/Super

The RTX 2080 TI is from older gen and the price for it is IMO a bit too much but that goes for the other GPUs as well. All the GPUs inflated in the price, leaving this one as a viable option.

The algorithm comparison below will differ slightly, but in general, the 2080 TI outperforms the 2080 Super in algorithms other than Ethash.

Overview:

Top 4 Algorithms:

Algorithm Ethash (ETH) Autolykos (ERGO) KawPow (RVN) FiroPow (FIRO)
Hashrate & Wattage 62 MH/s - 135W 108 Sol/s - 160W 36 MH/s - 210W 36 MH/s - 210W

MH/Dollar 0.039 MH 0.069 MH 0.024 MH 0.003 MH

3. Nvidia RTX 3080

The RTX 3080 is one of the most powerful GPUs out there. The price tag for it definitely got affected a lot so due to its price not being too budget-friendly, and the inconvenience of the thermal issues, I have it placed as the 3rd.

Top 4 Algorithms:

Algorithm Ethash (ETH) Autolykos (ERGO) KawPow (RVN) FiroPow (FIRO)
Hashrate & Wattage 62 MH/s - 135W 108 Sol/s - 160W 36 MH/s - 210W 36 MH/s - 210W

2. AMD Radeon RX 6800 Regular/XT

Surprising right? The 6800 Regular and XT are surely hidden gems. Their price did not inflate as much and they do provide really good performance although they are less efficient. Great for budgets.

1. Nvidia RTX 3070 / 3060Ti

The RTX 3070 and the 3060 TI are both awesome cards for mining. Although the 3070 is more future-proof because of how it outperforms in other algorithms.

Conclusion

Hope the Top 5 GPUs for Cryptocurrency Mining helped you decide which GPU you need to use.

Happy hashing!
